Utility Setup

Electric, gas, water, and when to get everything turned on.

Aim to have all utilities scheduled at least two weeks before your move date. Electric and gas typically require a service transfer or new account setup with one to five business days of lead time. Water is often handled by the municipality and may transfer automatically — but verify. Haven flags your utility deadlines as soon as you set a move date.

The essentials are electricity, gas (if applicable), water, and trash collection. Beyond those, you'll want to plan for internet, TV, and possibly a security system. Some homes also have propane, oil heating, or HOA-managed services. Haven walks through each one based on your specific home and helps you know what's needed.

Haven helps you coordinate utility setup — gathering your account info, identifying the right providers, and walking you through what to do. Some utility transfers require your direct authorization, so we can't always call on your behalf. But we make sure you know exactly who to call, what to say, and when to do it.

It depends on the utility. Most electric and gas transfers take one to three business days if the service already exists at the address. New service connections can take up to a week or more. Water is often same-day if the account is active. Don't assume anything is automatic — especially in a newly built home.

Yes — and timing matters. You want to schedule cancellation for the day after your move-out, not before. If you cancel too early, you'll lose electricity and water while you're still moving out. Haven's checklist includes both setup at the new address and cancellation or transfer from the old one, so nothing falls through the cracks.

Most utility companies process transfers on business days only. If your move-in is Saturday, schedule utilities to start Thursday or Friday to avoid arriving at a dark house. Haven factors your move date into your utility timeline automatically and flags cases where you need to act earlier than you'd expect.
